What is this podcast?

“Scope Change” is an open commentary on product design in these dynamic times.

The playbook for Design and Product are changing at every level. For now, it feels like standing in a doorway; not in, not out, but figuring out which way to go.

As a result, the show will go in a lot of different directions, sometimes serious topics like AIs impact on jobs, and sometimes unserious topics, like what ChatGPT thinks about David’s outfit.

The show should touch on a little current events, some commentary, and some advice.

Let’s figure out what’s ahead.

David Panarelli

Over the last 20 years, David has been using design skills to break down the ‘language barrier’ that prevents designers, users, and business stakeholders from delivering value.

Design is a messy business, even when the path ahead seems clear. Getting teams to perform at their best calls for a combination of servant leadership and strategic executive thinking that David has delivered for a range of companies and clients. Now, with the capabilities of AI-enabled tools, David is fundamentally re-thinking the Design process and working to bring everyone along.

Since 2008, David has intermittently provided independent consultantin with a specialization in Product Design and Special Projects.

David was an Experience Design Director at McKinsey & Company, based in the Los Angeles Office. He’s led design teams impactful design initiatives at Creative Market, Renovate America, LivingSocial, and CustomInk. David has supported early-career designers by teaching UX Design through General Assembly and mentoring through ADPList.

A native of the Washington DC suburbs, he now lives with his family in San Diego, California.

David is the co-founder of thepoetryshop.com.

Wait, Another podcast? Why?

I know, I know… we don’t need another dude with a microphone talking on the internet. I’ll try to keep it brief.

Just trying something new.

I have always been someone that figures things out by talking about them. That process of shaping an idea, hearing it back, and re-assessing the idea, helps me understand things. And when I better understand, I can do a better job in my own work and better help others.

It’s especially important when the ideas are coming in hot, like we are seeing now with the emergence of AI into Design and Product. But I have worked remotely for a long time, and I just don’t get a chance to talk it out. You spend a lot of that time thinking, but not talking. I’m not the only one out here trying to make sense of things, so I’m sharing what I’m seeing.

We need new maps. New career ladders. New processes for efficient work. We need to know how to trust this work and this tech, and when not to. Hopefully this show can do some good for someone.
